While attending the Miss Black America contest, Tyson met 18-year-old Desiree Washington. On July 19, 1991 Tyson took her back to his hotel room and allegedly raped the young pageant contestant. He was tried and convicted of rape, and in March of 1992, Tyson was sentenced to six years in prison. He spent three years of his six-year sentence in jail. Word leaked out that Tyson was a different man after spending time behind bars. He was said to be reading communist literature, Malcom X, and had even converted to Islam.
For expositional purposes, Finding Mike will cover Tyson’s teenage experiences that motivated him to become a boxer. The film will also show how Tyson became Heavyweight champion, at age 20, by knocking out Trevor Berbick in 1986. From there, the Tyson biopic will underline the subject’s pop culture persona, leading up his shocking 1990 loss to James « Buster » Douglas. Also, it’s impossible to ignore Tyson’s 1991 arrest for rape, and how he lost several years of his boxing prime after being incarcerated from April 1992 to March 1995. Upon being released, Tyson won four consecutive boxing matches before losing twice to Evander Holyfield, with one of the bouts involving Tyson’s biting off a chunk of his opponent’s ear – now an infamous pop culture moment from the late ’90s.
With money written all over the fight, it’s not hard to make sense of the fight between Paul and Tyson. While ‘The Problem Child’ will have his dream fight and the opportunity to fight his ideal, the allure of the boxing ring and maybe a hefty paycheck pulled Tyson. But the question lingers. Who demanded the fight in the first place? Is it what we need right now?
Paul isn’t a stranger to boxing much older men. In 2022, he battled former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. « The Spider » was 47 at the time, while Paul was 25. Another example was his back-to-back fights with ex-UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. Paul defeated the then-39-year-old twice in 2021, including via a vicious knockout.

Tyson was known for his powerful punching, aggressive style and swift knockouts that made him a crowd favorite.
In a 2014 interview with Donald McRae of The Guardian, Mike Tyson was in a dark time in his life when he got his famous tattoo. « I just hated myself then, » Tyson told McRae. « I literally wanted to deface myself. » He said he wanted his whole face done, but the tattoo artist told him he had a nice face and refused.
It is this notoriety that brought public fascination into who he is as an individual, and Hulu, as a part of its 2022 lineup, released Mike, a limited series looking to untangle the threads of Tyson’s life. However, Mike is not an authorized biopic, and Tyson has been reported to not be happy about the limited series’ creation. At the beginning of August 2022, he posted on Instagram that he did not support the Hulu series and that they sold the rights to his life story without giving him a cut of the payment. But this is not the first time a production company has adapted his story into entertainment—HBO came out with Tyson in 1995, which took an extensive look at the community and people around him rather than Tyson himself. Regardless, Hulu moved forward with the limited series and the first couple of episodes have made their way onto the streaming platform. This will not be the only adaptation, as Jamie Foxx, too, will be taking on the role in the near future.
Even though I’d covered most of his significant bouts at that point, it’s still not every day that Mike Tyson calls you at home so I was suspicious. Tyson’s voice was frequently imitated, and comedians used to make fun of his lisp and the higher pitch to his voice than his size suggested.
